Rules of Gun Safety

John Dean "Jeff" Cooper (May 10, 1920 – September 25, 2006) was a United States Marine, the creator of the "modern technique" of handgun shooting, and an expert on the use and history of small arms. This highly influential figure in today’s modern firearms training formalized and popularized the "Four Rules" of safe firearm handling.

With our over emphases on safety, our team added rule number 5.

They are:

  1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.

  2. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you’re ready to fire.

  3. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.

  4. Be sure of your target and what is in front and behind it.

  5. Never attempt to catch a falling weapon.
